  • Explore the Merrimack River and Pawtucket Canal on a boat tour in Lowell, Massachusetts this summer -

LOWELL, MA — for those who are familiar with Lowell’s canal system while on foot or as viewed from a vehicle, the summer offerings of canal boat tours with a Park Ranger regularly provide a unique perspective of those historical waterways. Each day through September 6, Lowell National Historical Park presents the “Working the Water” and “Engineering Innovation” tours, exploring the Pawtucket Canal and/or the Merrimack River above the dam and sharing the narrative of Lowell’s industrial history.

In addition, on two nights a week through August 20, the “Evening Cruise” offers an opportunity for visitors to pack a brown bag supper for a cruise on the Merrimack River, Pawtucket Canal, the mill pond and the upstream section of the river from the Pawtucket Dam. This two hour tour is offered each Thursday and Friday at 6:00 pm.

Discover Lowell from the perspective of its waterways this summer. For boat tour reservations and fee information, call the Park at 978-970-5000. For more information about Lowell National Historical Park, visit our website at www.nps.gov/lowe.

  • The Seabird Ecological Assessment Network (SEANET), based at the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, is an ongoing project assessing seabird mortality along the eastern seaboard of the United States. Over 100 citizen scientists volunteer to walk an assigned stretch of beach once or twice a month, record environmental data and report both dead and live birds seen on the beach. Their reports are used by SEANET to establish a baseline for unusual marine bird mortality events caused by natural (e.g., hurricanes) and human-induced events (e.g., oil spills) which helps to monitor the health of the entire marine ecosystem as well as what it means for the animals and people who use the beach.
SEANET is the only program conducting standardized beached bird monitoring on the Atlantic coast of the United States. Data is entirely volunteer generated, and you can help! If you are interested in taking an active role in the stewardship of the East Coast’s treasured shore, or in helping to get the word out about SEANET contact 508-887-4933 or seanet@tufts.edu. For more information on SEANET’s work: http://seanetters.wordpress.com.
